Description

Description:

The Department of Biochemistry & Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Tennessee (UT) seeks applications for a Research Associate to work under the supervision of Dr. Martin F. Engelke.

The Engelke lab investigates how molecular motor proteins function and how they are regulated and function in specialized transport inside cilia, specialized motile, and sensory organelles using mammalian cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, and biochemistry.

This Research Associate will perform experiments using a wide range of cell biological, biochemical, and biophysical experiments. He/she will also supervise students and support them with their research. Experiments will involve the manipulation of cells, working and isolating proteins from cell lysates, and studying live or fixed cells with appropriate fluorescence microscopy techniques. The Research Associate will lead the conception of research projects, using their independence and leadership to design experiments directly for him/her and support the students in the lab.

Qualifications

Duties/Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities for this position include:

· Research: The Research Associate will conduct original research and support student research. For research projects, he/she will independently develop mammalian cell lines, establish new cell-based assays, optimize fluorescence microscopy and biochemistry techniques, and analyze the resulting data using appropriate statistical methods. Additionally, the candidate will perform other research-related functions, including data presentation in lab meetings, departmental seminars, and conferences, and contribute to manuscript preparation.

· Supervision and training: The Research Associate will supervise the work of students in the lab, including ensuring that general lab and safety policies are followed. The research specialist will also be asked to independently train students in molecular biological procedures, fluorescence microscopy, data and statistical analysis, and the use of commonly used instruments.

· The candidate will also perform administrative tasks and contribute to basic lab upkeep.

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

· Master's or Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology, neuroscience, or a related field

Preferred Education and Experience

· Postdoctoral experience for more than 4 years

· Advanced cell biological, biochemical, and fluorescence microscopy skills

· Experience studying motor proteins and/or cilia biology

Required Skills and Abilities:

· Expertise working in the areas of biochemistry, biophysics, and cellular biology, including advanced skills working with mammalian cells, and the use of molecular and cellular biology techniques, and fluorescence microscopes

Support: This position is an 80% exempt staff position; MR11.

How to Apply:
