JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Veterinary Technician provides proper medical care to laboratory research animals, provides technical support and training to investigators using animals for laboratory research and helps oversee the LACU's animal health monitoring program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently assess sick, injured and behaviorally abnormal animals. Independently oversee and/or coordinate animal procedures.
- Examines animals that are reported as sick or injured. Performs initial examinations and decides which animals need the attention of the veterinarians, which may require euthanasia and which minor conditions can be immediately treated with standard treatments.
- Prepares animals for medical, surgical, diagnostic and research procedures. This includes the initial anesthesia as well as the preparation of the animal. Monitors animals during recovery from anesthesia.
- Exercises independent clinical judgment and expertise to anticipate routine treatments and diagnostic procedures, and prepares the animal(s), equipment and/or supplies that will be needed.
- Provides investigators with training in animal techniques and procedures. Demonstrates to and instructs investigators in proper handling, medical nursing techniques, procedures, regulatory requirements, dress code, and other animal care and regulatory requirements.
- Assures that veterinary prescribed medications and treatments are performed: orders and stocks veterinary drugs and supplies, administer and document treatments, arranges for weekend and holiday treatments including training of weekend staff for the needed procedures.
- Assists with the management of the animal health monitoring program under the general supervision of the clinical veterinarians.
- Rotates in the provision of on-call veterinary coverage, in conjunction with other veterinary personnel.
- Attends national and/or regional professional meetings.
- Performs other duties as necessary.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Veterinary Technician certification or Associate’s Degree in a related field related field (LAT certification preferred). (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years in a veterinary practice or a research facility with animals. Experience with ABSL-2 operations and prior experience in animal husbandry supervision is desired. Experience with IACUC and USDA/CDC/DOD compliance is desired Must be able to obtain a Department of Justice Security Risk clearance and DEA clearance. Must obtain the AALAS certification level of Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) within 24 months of hire. Must be able to respond to emergencies in the vivarium and support areas and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to work collaboratively in a research environment with culturally diverse populations and with individuals of varying educational and professional backgrounds (e.g., Animal Technicians, Veterinarians, Research Technicians, Principal Investigators).
- Knowledge of animal husbandry standards, regulatory guidelines, requirements, and common standard operating procedures.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision; explores new areas and seeks opportunities to apply new knowledge.
- Demonstrated professionalism, self-motivation, and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, and Outlook) and calendar systems.
- Understanding of common medical/veterinary terminology, abbreviations, and acronyms.
- Proficiency in independent drug dose calculations and medication preparation for animals ranging from 10g to 500lb.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings.
