HVAC Specialist II - Facilities Services - UTK
Job Description
Under supervision, the HVAC Specialist II is responsible for installing, repairing, maintaining, overhauling, cleaning, and servicing basic refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. This role supports the Air Conditioning Foreman and mechanics in performing assigned duties, assists in evaluating the needs of each HVAC system, and provides support to other areas of Facilities Services as requested.
Responsibilities
- Install, repair, maintain, overhaul, clean, and service basic refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
- Assist Air Conditioning Foreman and mechanics with the installation and maintenance of HVAC systems.
- Assist in evaluating HVAC systems to ensure critical heating and cooling systems are operational on campus.
- Monitor HVAC systems for deficiencies and take corrective actions as directed.
- Provide support to other areas of Facilities Services as needed.
- Assist Foreman and mechanics with the monitoring, repairing, and installing of air conditioning and heating systems.
- Report job information to supervision, including details of repairs, deficiencies found, and parts or materials needed for resolution.
- Report and address any unsafe practices or conditions to supervision.
- Study technical materials and repair manuals to enhance knowledge of equipment and systems used on campus.
- Learn and adhere to safety protocols necessary for the safe operation of all HVAC systems.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- EPA refrigerant handling certificate I and II
- Experience: 5 years’ experience or trade school and experience. (Experience may substitute for Education on a year-for-year basis.)
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to understand standard equipment operating and handling safety protocols
- Mechanical knowledge and skills to service and repair HVAC systems and related equipment
- Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks under supervision.
- Ability to maintain a good leave record.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
- Ability to follow given instructions and keep records.
- Ability to install, maintain, adjust, overhaul and repair equipment such as refrigerated storage boxes, window air conditioning units, refrigerated water coolers, ventilation systems, and forced air heating systems.
- Ability to perform physical tasks associated with HVAC installation and maintenance.
- Strong communication skills for reporting and collaboration.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to safety protocols.
- Willingness to learn and increase knowledge through technical materials and repair manuals.
- Other Conditions:
- Maintain a valid driver’s license
- Ability to wear a respirator and other assigned PPE

About the Department
UT Facilities Services is responsible for the care and keeping of more than 300 facilities and utilities systems in and around Knoxville. As the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s largest non-academic department, team members are responsible for facilities maintenance and repair, custodial needs, landscaping and lawncare, utility work, in-house and capital construction projects, facilities planning and design, environmental initiatives, pest control, campus event services, and facilities administration functions for both the flagship campus and the agricultural institute. The Facilities Services staff provides around-the-clock coverage to ensure students, staff, faculty, and fans have a consistent and positive experience every time they step foot on Rocky Top.
