Senior Line Installer I - Facilities Services - UTK

The Facilities Services Department is responsible for the maintenance and operations of all facilities which includes utility, buildings, and grounds systems. The Sr Line Installer assists in the installation, operation, and maintenance of a large high voltage distribution system for the U.T. Knoxville campus. This position provides good customer service to both internal and external customers. They also fill in for the foreman during absences and train other employees as necessary. They inspect equipment on a regular basis in order to maintain the safety of students, staff, and the general public.

• Under the supervision of the electrical foreman, this position inspects, maintains, and installs high voltage electrical systems and related components including but not limited to transformers, switches, switch gear, substation, and line work above and below ground.
• Make skillful decisions based on knowledge and experience.
• This Individual shall be able to make independent decision based on experience and UT standards of operation.
• Perform diagnostics, maintain, or repair all electrical HV systems on campus.
• Ensure reliable operation of all critical research and laboratory electrical systems distributed to campus buildings.
• Interact with students, faculty, staff, and the general public in a courteous, professional, and inclusive manner.
• Coordinates duties with crew in the absence of the foreman and instructing them in the use of tools and materials. Assist foreman with duties as lead of crew.
• Studies blueprints, taking off materials, inventorying stock, and ordering materials.
• Studies technical manuals and equipment information to improve knowledge and understanding of all the campus electrical systems and associated equipment.
• Take available classes online and from vendors to stay up to date on the latest maintenance and control strategies and technology.
• Complete training to maintain and update skills, to assist contractors, other shops, and to be able to instruct and assist junior personnel in proper procedures and daily work.
• Assists with the inspection and repair of outdoor lighting systems and sports facility lighting.
• Report job information to supervision including any repairs, issues, deficiencies, and needed parts to correct the assigned problem on lighting and all electrical systems.
• Work with other departments and craft disciplines in assisting the completion of reported problems and assignments.
• Report any unsafe practices or conditions discovered in a timely manner.
• Assist in the preparation of and work special events as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Education:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Vocational or technical training such as an Electrical Apprenticeship and/or electrical distribution
• Experience: A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in high voltage or as a journeyman in high voltage distribution construction and maintenance techniques. Experience with proper safety requirements and procedures is a must. Experience working in a team atmosphere.
• Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • A good working knowledge of all electrical and distribution system practices.
  • A knowledge of industrial electricity and job skills.
  • The ability to read blueprints.
  • The ability to work on live high voltage and electrical system components when necessary.
  • The ability to climb poles, sports lighting poles, and structures.
  • The ability to work in confined spaces, under adverse conditions, and in high places.
  • Good hand and eye coordination, mechanical aptitude and reasonable intelligence.
  • A good working knowledge of high voltage tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • The ability to perform hard physical work for long periods; to lift, pull, and, push heavy loads.
  • Must have the skill and aptitude for being lead of crew and/or fill in for foreman when needed.
  • CPR training and other safety skills as required by OSHA.

  • Valid Driver's License
  • CDL class B or the ability to acquire in 12 months after hire date.

UT Facilities Services is responsible for the care and keeping of more than 300 facilities and utilities systems in and around Knoxville. As the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s largest non-academic department, team members are responsible for facilities maintenance and repair, custodial needs, landscaping and lawncare, utility work, in-house and capital construction projects, facilities planning and design, environmental initiatives, pest control, campus event services, and facilities administration functions for both the flagship campus and the agricultural institute.
