The Staff Nurse, RN position is a full-time day shift position. The individual will work with an assigned medical provider to provide primary care medical services to eligible students at the University of Tennessee.

The position was established to provide outpatient care to eligible students following a medical provider’s orders and/or written policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

Education: Associate degree and Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing Program

Licensure: State of Tennessee Registered Nurse license

Experience: 3 years’ experience in a hospital or physician’s office and experience working within an electronic medical record/practice management system that is Windows based

Knowledge and abilities:

  • Must have knowledge of basic human anatomy
  • Must have the knowledge of nursing licensure limitations
  • Must have the knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules
  • Must have knowledge of medical charting best practices
  • Must have knowledge of basic medical coding including CPT codes and diagnosis codes

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree

Experience: Previous experience working within a university student health center. Previous experience working with the Medicat electronic medical records program. Previous experience with dealing with emergency medical situations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: All previously mentioned items plus the ability to stay calm during a medical emergency. Must have ability and skill to be a team member.

Direct Patient Care Duties:

  • Assesses patients to determine reason for medical visit
  • Performs assessment procedures as indicated by patient’s symptoms
  • Initiates nursing preliminary treatment plan by providing assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and formulates a plan of care based on initial assessment
  • Anticipates medical provider’s needs based on findings
  • Performs nursing procedures as indicated based on skill level and/or assists the medical provider with examinations, procedures, and treatments as needed
  • Ensure necessary equipment and supplies are available
  • Obtains consent forms when indicated
  • Serves as a chaperone when indicated
  • Obtains lab results, informs medical provider when results are available
  • Administers medication as ordered by the medical provider
  • Make appropriate entries into the patient’s medical record
  • Assists with emergency medical situations
  • Scheduling of appointments with consultants as indicated
  • Performs follow-up of all referrals to outside medical care
  • Works in all patient care areas with the Student Health Center as the need arises
  • Advise patients regarding questions and concerns based on nursing judgement and/or established medical provider routines/instructions
  • Reinforces and clarifies medical provider instructions as needed
  • Expedites appropriate charges as indicated and advises patient of expenses for which they are responsible
  • Check medical records to ascertain completed diagnostic reports are present, forwards reports to medical provider for review/follow-up and closure of medical record
  • Scans, medical records, health history, insurance documents as needed
  • Contacts all patients after all in office procedures
  • Obtains medical insurance prior authorizations for referrals to specialists and/or performance of special testing
  • Educates, teaches, and trains patients as needed

Indirect Patient Care Duties:

  • Restocks and maintains supplies in patient care areas including the supply closets and exam rooms.
  • Prepare exam rooms including the utilization of disinfectants on surfaces to ensure infection control between each patient
  • Prepares soiled instruments/equipment for pick up by housekeeping staff for sterile processing
  • Copies patient education materials as needed
