The Associate Director is part of the director’s team in the College of Arts & Sciences Advising Services and assists in the direction of the office. Advising Services is an academic unit which develops, implements, and maintains academic planning programs that focus on undergraduate student academic success, retention, and progression towards graduation for over 7,000 college majors, exploratory, and pre-professional. Staff in Arts and Sciences Advising Services provide programs and services which support self-exploration, major and career exploration, and academic planning. The Associate Director is also responsible for Health Professions Advising Initiatives.

Required Qualifications
Education: Master’s Degree

Experience:
Seven years of full-time advising or student success experience working with students, faculty, and staff in a college or university setting
Experience supervising full-time staff
Experience planning and executing programs and events

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Ability to work with students with a variety of backgrounds and goals
Strong writing, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Demonstrate ability to supervise a staff of advising professionals
Computer skills including familiarity with student information systems
Knowledge of academic advising in higher education
Ability to discuss the value of the liberal arts and general education
Demonstrated ability to coordinate events and programs
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or a Liberal Arts field

Advising or student success experience in a Liberal Arts college
Experience working with students pursuing health professions
Experience working with students in academic distress

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of advising technology and its application
Knowledge of health professions fields
Knowledge in best practices for advising students on pre-health paths

Anticipated hiring range: $80,000 - $83,000

Health Professions Advising Initiatives
Train advisors to work with students preparing to enter professional school in health fields.
Advising Alpha Epsilon Delta, the health professions honor society.
Coordinate the pre-professional file process, reviewing and distributing pre-professional evaluations from faculty to medical schools.
Develop and update health professions curricular materials (catalog and pre-health guides).
Coordinate the visits of admissions officers from professional schools to the UT campus.
Coordinate the instruction to and serve as the instructor of record for a Health Care Delivery course (INPG 210)
Chair the Scholarship Committee for the awarding of pre-health scholarships. Update and reevaluate the scholarship process as needed
Monitor all content of the Pre-Health Website and make edits/updates on a regular basis.
Coordinate all aspects of the annual Health Fair
Partner with Career Development and Academic Exploration to coordinate an annual Pre-Health Prep-week
Provide a pre-health presentation for incoming students during orientation
Develop, organize, and execute workshops for pre-health students
Develop relationships with other offices across campus to coordinate pre-health guidance across campus
Serve as the point of contact for the Health Professions minor
Create and grow a pre-professional program that serves all students pursuing a health-profession regardless of their major
Supervision
Supervise the Advising Coordinator and professional advisors in the Natural Sciences
Supervise daily activities of administrative support staff
Evaluate performance of administrative support staff and make recommendations concerning hiring and retraining
Evaluate performance of Natural Sciences advising staff and make recommendations concerning hiring and retraining
Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with supervisees
Mentor advisors through the career path process
Mentor those off the career path in the College Skill Based Compensation process
Management/Communications
Respond to advisor, student, and staff concerns on a daily basis
Assist in the coordination of weekly advisor meetings
Assist in the development and implementation of an annual advisor training workshop
Assist in on-going training of professional advisors in Advising Services
Develop and conduct training for departmental advisors across the College
Academic Advising
Provide general advising and specific advising for pre-professional students and students in transition
Make decisions about late adds, course overloads, and tracking term appeals
Counsel with students regarding course withdrawals
Conduct intrusive advising sessions with students in serious academic difficulty
Answer detailed advising questions via email and phone
Assist with phone calls from parents and students
