Position Summary:

Provides assistance to the cardiologist or cardiac surgeon in performing diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization and angiography procedures, measuring cardiovascular parameters such as cardiac output, blood flow velocity, cardiovascular dynamics, cardiac electrophysiology parameters, intracardiac shunt detection, valve flow/valve area determinations, intracardiac pressure measurements, oximetry determination, cineangiocardiography, and the measurement and calculation of cardiac function indices. The technologist assists in all phases of catheterization procedure including insertion of the catheter, operation of various electronic instruments, and calculation of hemodynamic data.

Responsibilities

  • Possesses clinical expertise and knowledge of unit to independently resolve complex patient management and physician issues.
  • Serves as a role model by assuming the role of team leader and the responsibilities of a preceptor; cross-trains other areas and provides education to the community and department.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, general safety and radiation safety standards, and equipment quality control.
  • Actively participates in the orientation and training of new employees and students.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in complex clinical skills to include: right and left heart catheterizations, PTCI's, stemi’s, ablations, and pacemakers.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in cardiac anatomy and physiology, correlating pressure wave forms and rhythm analysis.
  • Proficient in patient assessment, monitoring, and sterile technique as required.
  • Assists in the maintenance and effective use of all equipment and supplies in the clinical areas.
  • Serves as a member of department or hospital committee with documented participation of 75%.
  • Responds appropriately and timely to patients, physicians, and other customer needs.
  • Provides nine (9) credit hours of in-service training per year.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

Minimum Experience:

Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience, including at least two (2) years of professional Cath Lab experience. Experience to include: clinical expertise and knowledge for structural heart, high risk PTCI, peripheral vascular, carotid intervention, T-car, cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac ablations, and cardiac resynchronization management demonstrated by observation and documented on a competency checklist.

Education clinical experience for certification and/or licensure is acceptable.

Licensure Requirement:

Must hold current registration as a:

  • CCI Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) and/or
  • CCI Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) and/or
  • ARRT RT(R) -- preferably with a VI or CI category designation.
