Position Summary:
This is an entry level position in which a new employee will be developed in the following areas: collection and proper handling of venous and capillary blood specimens throughout the hospital and collection of arterial blood specimens for arterial blood gas studies as required by the facility. Responsible for the safety and comfort of customers. Clerical and computer duties as required for the position.
Responsibilities
- Properly collects blood samples from venous and capillary (both finger and heel) sites as required by the facility. Proper use of aseptic technique in the collection of blood culture specimens.
- Performs basic phlebotomy functions for all age specific groups to include adults, children, and infants.
- Properly handles all specimens including prompt transport to the lab, special tube requirements, on ice as needed, preparation and preservation, without contamination, etc.
- Properly uses blood bank identification system for labeling blood bank specimens.
- Delivers all specimens to proper department within the laboratory.
- Correctly identifies patients using two patient identifiers either by asking the patient his/her name and birthdate, by asking a family member to state the patient’s name and birthdate when the patient cannot, or by asking the RN to identify the patient by name and birthdate.
- Properly uses blood bank ID system for labeling blood bank specimens.
- Uses hospital EMR system to scan laboratory barcode labels and patient armband to accurately label all specimens in conjunction with correctly using two patient identifiers to assure the correct patient is receiving laboratory services; labels all specimens in presence of the patient.
- Maintains phlebotomy tray and work area in a neat, organized, and sanitary manner.
- Responsible for care and maintenance of equipment and supplies and for notifying supervisor when items are in need of repair or replacement.
- Must comply with OSHA standards, Universal Precautions, hospital safety manuals, and laboratory policies and procedures.
- Responsible for working on Lab and/or HIS computer systems as appropriate for specific hospital facility.
- Responsible for checking uncollected/incomplete work lists several times during the shift and following up on any uncollected specimens. Directly responsible for managing specimen priority draws, i.e. stat, timed collections, etc.
- Works closely with co-workers to perform a team function to obtain sample collections in a timely manner.
- Assists in the orientation and training of new and existing employees.
- Handles biohazard waste according to policy.
- Other duties may include receiving specimens into the laboratory LIS, laboratory order entry, and processing of reference lab specimens.
- Local travel required.
- Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill, and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Preference may be given to individuals possessing a HS diploma or GED. Ten (10) hours of continuing education per year.

Licensure Requirement:
Employee must have a valid Tennessee driver’s license and state mandated minimum insurance coverage. Driving record must meet Covenant Health minimum standards at the date of hire and throughout employment tenure.
