BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Provides technician support under the direct supervision of a pharmacist that may include monitoring controlled substances for potential diversion, purchasing, inventory management, supporting Pharmacy department automation, or providing medication reconciliation services.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Supervisory Responsibilities: No
Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
License/Certification Required: Current registration with the TN Board of Pharmacy required. State Board approved Technician Certification for CPhT status required.
Minimum Work Experience: 3 years experience as hospital Pharmacy Technician required, controlled substance monitoring experience preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Advanced computer skills
- Use of Drug Diversion software (ex. Pandora or Analytics), Omnicell, and Meditech is heavily preferred
- Basic math skills
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists Operations and Purchasing Managers with both automated and manual controlled medication reports, including diversion analysis (ex. Analytics). Ensures controlled medication inventory and documentation discrepancies are reviewed and handled appropriately within a 24 hour time frame, including any patient billing adjustments necessary. Demonstrates proficiency with math calculations. Prepares/selects age appropriate medication for non-sterile compounding, filling, and dispensing.
- Provides a double or triple check to Pharmacists prior to dispensing. Prepackages and labels medications into unit doses from bulk supply. Maintains accurate records including all regulatory logs. Appropriately prioritizes medication orders. Ensures equipment operation and maintenance. Compounded non-sterile preparations.
- Appropriate use of automated dispensing cabinets and the Pharmacy carousel including discrepancy resolution & billing adjustments. Demonstrates clean and organized work flow. Participates in a rotation for monthly inventory check of the Pharmacy vault. Follows policy concerning medications with “special” requirements. All competencies are maintained in a timely manner and do not go past due.
- Purchasing: Maintain inventory in split-billing software (340B Optimizer) to ensure that NDCs are correct and matched to Meditech Drug Dictionary. Review daily 340B reports and accumulators for accuracy. Daily ordering of drugs to optimize savings through the 340B program. Main purchaser for medications (excluding schedule II controlled substances), maximizing GPO contract compliance. Assists with supply ordering and reception. Works with the Purchasing Manager concerning direct purchases and specialty medications. Manages shortages and backorders. Coordinates monthly expiration checks with the Inventory Specialist and Technician staff. Maintains records. Assists with repackaging and record maintenance. Assists with maintenance of emergency kits/carts, AEDs, and records. Demonstrates clean and organized workflow. All annual competencies are maintained in a timely manner and do not go past due.
- Inventory: Main purchaser for supplies. Assists with medication ordering (excluding controlled substances). Receives medication orders and coordinates reception of supply inventory with Technician and Intern staff. Coordinates monthly expiration checks with the Purchasing Specialist and Technician staff. Maintains records. Ensures that inventory is appropriately rotated. Primarily responsible for repackaging medication inventory and maintenance of these records. Maintains emergency kits/carts, AEDs, and records. Performs quality control measures for processes including repackaging and emergency supplies. Demonstrates clean and organized workflow. All annual competencies are maintained in a timely manner and do not go past due.
- Automation: Assists and coordinates with both the Operations Manager and the Informatics Manager in the implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, preventative maintenance, and upgrades regarding hardware and software for repackaging, automated dispensing, iv compounder, Pharmacist remote verification, Pharmacist order receive, Pharmacist item verification. Assists with policy development and changes regarding responsible systems. Updates manuals and references as needed. Non-sterile, non-hazardous compounding -operates the repackaging equipment with and without assistance including the tablets, capsules, liquids, oral syringes, specialty kits, and other items requiring barcode packaging. Assists with maintenance of repacking and quality control logs. Orders and maintains supplies as necessary to ensure continued workflow for responsible systems, including printer labels and spare parts. Maintains and expiration tracks overflow inventory in storage. Demonstrates clean and organized workflow.
- Maintains a current, hard copy of the automated carousels inventory database. Participates in annual inventory as needed. Participates in a rotation for monthly inventory check of the Pharmacy vault. Restocks received orders to the Pharmacy carousel and as needed to the Pharmacy vault. Follows policy concerning medications with “special” requirements. All competencies are maintained in a timely manner and do not go past due.
- Medication Reconciliation: Assists Pharmacists in obtaining complete and accurate medication histories for patients who are being admitted to the hospital. Conducts patient/family interviews regarding home medications, recognizing and clarifying incomplete or inaccurate lists based on medical history and communication with outpatient Pharmacies and Physician offices. Enters home medications accurately into Meditech in a timely manner for Pharmacist review prior to patient admission, or as soon as possible afterwards. Provides continued communication between nursing, physicians, and outpatient pharmacies regarding home medications for patients admitted to the hospital. Promptly brings clarification/intervention issues to the pharmacist's attention for resolution. Demonstrates proficiency with math calculations. Maintains accurate records of medication reconciliation activities and quality assurance. Demonstrates clean and organized work flow, including adherence to infection control protocols for patient rooms. All competencies are maintained in a timely manner and do not go past due.
- Controlled Substance Surveillance: Restocks medication rooms with medication inventory, reconciles un-administered patient doses. Communicates supply and medication needs to Pharmacy Purchasing staff. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees. Continuously displays a “can do” attitude within the department and across departmental lines to contribute to the overall customer service program in place at the hospital. Resolves questions with the Pharmacist, Nursing service, and/or Physician. Answers the phone promptly and appropriately. Promotes and maintains professional relationships with other departments. Effectively trains new Interns or Technicians when assigned
- Purchasing: Conducts training for inventory receival as well as emergency kit/cart receival and replenishment. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Continuously displays a "can do" attitude within the department and across departmental lines to contribute to the overall customer service program in place at the hospital. Resolves questions with Pharmacist, Nursing service, and/or Physician. Promotes and maintains professional relationships with other departments.

Effectively trains Pharmacy staff as assigned, barcode labeling and troubleshooting for automated dispensing cabinet, Pharmacy carousel, and printers.
- Medication Reconciliation: Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Continually displays a "can do" attitude within the department and across departmental lines to contribute to the overall customer service program in place at the hospital. Resolves questions with the Pharmacist, Nursing Service, and/or Physician. Promotes and maintains professional relationships with other departments. Assists main pharmacy when required (during staffing or workload emergencies) by appropriately delivering medications to the Nursing units. Effectively trains new Interns or Technicians when assigned. Teaches “shadowing” Pharmacy students.

- Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably. Minimizes waste by acquiring a complete understanding of specific mixing instructions prior to medication compounding. Provides par adjustment, additions, or deletion suggestions and checks for expiring inventory monthly. Acquires complete understanding of specific mixing instructions prior to medication compounding.
- Maintains packing slips, DSCSA, invoice processing, returns, and reconciliation for Financial Services. Coordinates management of inventory for reverse distribution with the Purchasing Manager and Purchasing Specialist.
- Coordinates annual inventory with the Purchasing Manager and Purchasing Specialist. Provides pricing and NDC information to Pharmacy Informatics, as needed.

- Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
