BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Performs a variety of diagnostic procedures using ionizing radiation for diagnosis of disease processes and delineation of both normal/abnormal anatomy as well as pathological conditions in areas of the human body. Performs all duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Radiological Technologist.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Supervisory Responsibilities: NO

Minimum Education: High School/GED Required. Currently enrolled in an accredited Radiological Program.

Degree: Currently enrolled in an accredited Radiological Program

Minimum Work Experience: Must be a second year student currently enrolled in an accredited Radiological Program.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Under direct supervision of a registered technologist: Ability to operate varies x-ray equipment, fluoroscopic and auxiliary equipment to produce quality images.
  • Able to adapt to new programs and equipment upgrades as radiological field advances, effective organizational and time management skills, effective written and verbal communication skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to provide service to patients under the direct supervision of a registered staff technologist.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge and skill levels in area of expertise to ensure provision of the highest quality patient care services, including the operation of multiple radiographic units: Maintains safe operation of equipment and accessories with proper warm-up exposure, daily QC and good reporting techniques. Follows proper shutdown procedures for scanning and processing equipment. Performs daily work with knowledge of Radiation/MRI Safety/Protection techniques to minimize hazards, including: portable, C-ar,, fluoroscopy, digital radiogrpahy (DR), amd computed radiology (CR).
  • Maintains Quality Control guidelines, State and Federal regulations and department policies/procedures.
  • Reviews and enters patient information into the hospital (Meditech) Information and/or PACS systems in a timely, accurate and efficient manner after each patient exam by following the PACS/Meditech workflow, including: verification of orders, patient name, exam accession number, patient tracking data, approving studies, QA, and technologist's name on exams.
  • Maintains safe operation of equipment and accessories with proper warm-up exposure, daily QC and good reporting techniques and notifies the department and/or PACS manager of any errors or outstanding problems with completing patient data in Meditech and/or PACS systems, while also following proper shutdown procedures for scanning and processing equipment.
  • Communicates with the radiologist on duty to assure selection of the correct scanning parameters when necessary.
  • Performs basic scheduling needs in Community Wide Scheduling (CWS).
  • Demonstrates effective Patient Care by helping patients to feel comfortable by introducing self and calling patients by their name, providing explanations (within scope of practice) to patients about upcoming exams and procedures, using terminology and phrasing which is responsive to and appropriate for patient's age, language skills, and emotional state, and keeping patients informed of any delay.
  • Effectively problem-solves with customers by promptly and courteously providing the information and services requested by customers, taking the initiative to seek assistance from others; informing customers of the need to do so; explaining who is being called upon to help; ensuring a smooth transition to other parties, providing consistent and timely follow-through which ensures that all customer requests are addressed in a way which minimizes inconvenience to all parties, and maintaining composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner when interacting with all customers, including those who are ill, angry, confused or emotionally distressed.
  • Creates an environment in which customers feel valued and respected by maintaining strict patient confidentiality at all times by following HIPPA guidelines, reraining from discussing personal matters in the workplace, making every attempt to defuse potentially volatile situations by speaking calmly and expressing compassion and understanding, and seeking assistance from co-worker, management, physician or other appropriate person when immediate resolution is not forthcoming.
  • Works with others in a proactive way to troubleshoot operational and programmatic problems and recommends changes to policies, procedures and department environment to enhance the department's ability to provide optimum service to all customers.
  • Develops and fosters good oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively in person and on the phone with patients, visitors, and hospital/medical office personnel and contributes to an environment that is conducive to the clinical education of students, other healthcare trainees, and employees
  • Willingly accepts other assignments as deemed necessary by department management, including helping out in front office, transporting patients and/or QA projects.
  • Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably and ensures that supplies are utilized in a cost-effective manner and charged appropriately.
  • Seeks out innovative solutions for problems affecting care and/or service, these solutions may address effective resource utilization reflective of Lean Principles, maintainence of quality, cost effectiveness, cost benefit, and efficiency of staffing needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS-Note: Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling is required up to 50 lbs occasionally, 20-30 lbs frequently and 10 lbs constantly to move objects of up to 150 lbs. Sudden emergency situations have the potential for exposure to lifting or moving of up to 150 lbs. Frequent bending, walking, sitting, squatting, reaching, and stnding are required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
