BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Manages the hospital gift shop and schedules and manages the gift shop staff and gift shop volunteers. Is responsible for budgeting, financial systems and records, procurement, receiving of merchandise and accounts payable, pricing, mark-downs, and display of merchandise, and sales strategy. Develops strategic plan to grow net proceeds year-over-year. Trains and supervises volunteers and ensures excellent customer service is displayed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Supervisory Responsibilities: YES

Minimum Education: Bachelors

Degree: Business, Finance, or related field

Minimum Work Experience: 5 years retail experience. Additional experience may substitute education requirements. Experience with Counterpoint POS system preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops strategies to manage the gift shop within current retail trends and develops strategies to manage the gift shop within current retail trends.
  • Coordinates the development or enhancements to budgeting, invoicing, inventory, and financial and marketing (web-based and in store) systems within the gift shop and coordinates a supply of non-prescription / over the counter medications with the Inpatient Pharmacy.
  • Demonstrates ongoing evaluation and analysis of customer needs and preferences and creates strategic relationships with Marketing and Supply Chain to develop ETCH branded merchandise.
  • Seeks opportunities for local, regional and national buying at gift shows and through sales reps which ensure purchasing of appropriate quantities and types of merchandise with highest possible sales potential and designs creative merchandise displays, promotions and activities to promote sales
  • Systematically evaluates shop operations, merchandise and customer preferences leading to timely and appropriate management decisions and Develops training materials and methodologies to assure accurate and continual education of volunteers in shop.
  • Represents the gift shop to the Children’s Hospital Volunteers Board for allocation of net proceeds, represents Children’s Hospital to the community and promotes the hospital’s mission and initiatives, and represents the department and gift shop throughout the hospital and promotes effective and appropriate volunteer service which make efficient and effective use of volunteer skills and time
  • Trains and supervises volunteers in appropriate roles to support gift shop operations and develops and cultivates positive relationships with vendors and customers as well as volunteers, hospital staff and other visitors.
  • Works with hospital staff on store design and renovation and develops strategies to expand the gift shop’s service excellence and service to patients, families, visitors and staff
  • Collaborates with all customers, internal and external, to support excellence in retail operations as a vital part of the delivery of care and continuously demonstrates a positive attitude within the department and gift shop and across departmental lines to assure excellence in the customer service program
  • Exhibits good listening skills and a demeanor which facilitates and encourages others to engage, assertively seeks information and communications which lead to depth of understanding, and assertively dialogues with customers, staff and volunteers toward mutually satisfying experiences and relationships.
  • Proactively deals directly and openly with colleagues regarding professional conflicts, seeks information regarding loss/control (shop lifting) and effectively trains staff and volunteers in appropriate techniques to identify and discourage, and counsels with and coaches staff and volunteers in effective customer service.
  • Produces accurate and timely newsletters and communications which assure volunteers are informed as well as reports and analyses which lead to effective decisions and management, and willingly accepts new assignments and responsibilities as requested.
  • Plans for and assures compliance with budgets and assures appropriate stewardship of financial resources and utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.
  • Develops methodologies and systems to assure appropriate management and usage of merchandise and develops special events and activities which exhibit appropriate and efficient management of time and resources to maximize benefit to the hospital.
  • Proactively plans and assures safety and security of merchandise and equipment.

  • Medium lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 20-50 lbs occasionally, 10-20 lbs frequently, and 10 lbs constantly to move objects. Sudden emergency situations have the potential for exposure to lifting or mving up to 100 lbs. Frequent bending, walking, sitting, squatting, reaching, and standing are required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
