BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Medical Tech Specialist should demonstrate competency in routine testing in the laboratory (may include specialized areas of the Laboratory, including but not limited to Microbiology, Blood Bank, General, etc.) and apply comprehensive technical knowledge to carry out more complex assignments. They must also have effective communication skills and be able to organize tasks and projects without close supervision. The Medical Tech Specialist should be able to exercise independent judgment in decision making to resolve new or unusual problems related to general or technical aspects of the job.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education: Bachelors Required
Degree: Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited college or certificate as a Medical Technologist by HEW examination
License/Certification Required: Certification as MLS or MT by ASCP, AMT or AAB
Minimum Work Experience: 4 years of medical technology experience preferred, OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. State License and certification/registration or certification/registry eligible as a MT or CLS is required.

- Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, equipment, and techniques of medical technology.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct and assist phlebotomists and technologists/technicians with daily workflow. Accountable for performance and documentation in work area on daily basis with strong communication and organizational skills
- Standardizes, calibrates, performs preventive maintenance, and performs in-depth troubleshooting on equipment and instruments
- Assists supervisor to ensures that all maintenance schedules are followed, all instruments are validated, testing is performed, and maintains appropriate records for regulatory agencies
- Assists in the development and/or design of new test procedures and/or methodologies. Participates in the evaluation, correlation, and introduction of new instruments and/or procedures. Performs other special projects and miscellaneous duties as assigned, including inventory management and reagent preparation
- Assumes designated functions of the supervisor in his/her absence. Instructs and trains new or less skilled personnel regarding procedures, policies, and use of equipment and serves as a technical resource for the laboratory.
- Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, compliance activities, and policies and procedures
- Maintains policy and procedure guidelines and provides direction and guidance for questions and/or problems concerning specimen acceptability, unusual or discrepant results, instrument, or method problems and/or situations where quality controls are outside of acceptable limits
- Provides day-to-day direction to Laboratory associates in assigned area. Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
- Serves as a safety coach and educational resource for the Core Lab and clinical laboratory personnel; Performs routine safety audits to identify deviations in lab and hospital safety policies; Promptly notifies the Core Lab Supervisor or other member of the Lab Administration Team when any deviations are found and assists with corrective action when needed.
- Regularly assists the Core Lab supervisor and other members of the Lab Administration Team in the preparation of the laboratory and lab personnel for inspection by regulatory agencies (CAP, State of TN/CLIA, JCAHO, FDA, AABB, etc.).
- Maintains a thorough working knowledge and understanding of regulatory guidelines and accreditation requirements; Routinely audits the department to identify regulatory compliance issues and acts promptly, under the direction of their supervisor, to correct any deficiencies found.
- Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Assures standards are met related to calibrations, documentation, etc. Demonstrates reliability and speed in reporting, spec processing, calibrations, etc. Effectively manages technical aspects of work areas.
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives
- Foster and encourage principles of C/FCC to include: communication, education, orientation, and implementation of C/FCC actions and projects.
- Acts as a resource for test-related issues for technicians, phlebotomists, secretary and other medical staff, as appropriate. Willing to be present and/or readily available on short notice during regulatory inspections.
- Creates a productive work environment as related to expectations, interruptions, schedules, etc. Willingly accepts any other assignment that may be requested.
- Minimizes costs in supplies, time and training to product test results by following established procedures and taking care to “do it right the first time”.
- Minimizes costs in equipment repairs, repeat work, QC, etc. by following established procedures and taking care to “do it right the first time”.
- Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

- Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
