Position Summary:
The Senior Business Analyst’s primary responsibility at Jewelry Television® (JTV) be to assist the Strategy team’s mandate to provide timely, insightful, and actionable data-driven recommendations to support company growth and profitability.
This role is the critical link between complex retail data (sales, inventory, customer behavior, & operations) and strategic business action. The ideal candidate will have the ability to transform raw data information into compelling, insightful data visualizations that directly inform executive-level decision-making and thought processing across Planning, Merchandising, Marketing, and Operations teams.
Scope and Impact:
Although the position is in the Strategy department, the role requires cross-functional interaction and communication with C-level and EVP/SVP senior executives from areas such as Merchandising, Marketing, Finance, Broadcast Planning, Supply Chain, and IT. There would also be sizable interaction with our CXO leaders, and the recommendations made by the Senior Business Analyst to those leaders would have a significant impact on the execution of the company overall direction.
Key Responsibilities
Problem Solving and Opportunity Identification:
- Identify growth and profit improvement opportunities by providing insightful analysis and making compelling recommendations to senior management.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on key retail performance indicators (KPIs) such as sell-through, inventory turnover, margin, basket size, and customer lifetime value.
- Lead root cause analysis on shifts in business performance (e.g., unexpected dips in category sales or channel performance), articulating the "why" and proposing solutions.
- Conduct research and analysis on internal and external environments and provide business and competitive intelligence and insights.
- Analyze data with an investigative mindset using a hypothesis-driven approach to identify opportunities for valued change.
Financial Modeling and Quantification:
- Mine corporate data to support the strategic plans and processes related to customers, merchandising categories, capital productivity, marketing and overall operational performance.
- Identify the key drivers of financial performance for specific strategy initiatives.
- Assist in developing business cases for strategic initiatives (modeling of payoff and investments over a period of time) which form the basis of Executive committee approvals.
- Actively participate in strategic planning, translating business questions into analytical frameworks and, conversely, translating analytical findings back into clear, actionable business recommendations for leadership.
- Conduct ad hoc and pro forma / “what if” analyses in support of potential decisions.
Data Science, Advanced Analytics and Visualization:
- Develop advanced analytical models (e.g., regression, time series, XGBoost, CLV, etc.) to forecast business outcomes and assess the potential impact of strategic initiatives.
- Maintain ongoing reporting and measurement processes (e.g., MMM, MTA, etc.) to enhance quality and efficiency of future decision making.
- Partner with Data Engineering and IT teams to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and accessibility of data used in analysis.
- Design, develop, and maintain best-in-class interactive dashboards and reports using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms. Focus will be on the thought process behind the visualization—ensuring clarity, eliminating noise, and directing the user's eye to the key insight.
Measurement and Reporting:
- Setup initial testing plans for pilots/tests. Partner with business units such as Marketing and E-commerce teams, to design and visualize the results of A/B tests, ensuring test outcomes are clearly understood and integrated into future strategy.
- Use advanced statistical techniques to select test vs. control cohorts.
- Identify metrics that measure performance and response.
- Use multivariate regression and other statistical techniques to measure impact on profitability/growth.
- Develop scorecard system to measure results. Track results against the key drivers of financial performance for specific strategy initiatives. Incorporate measurements from pilots/tests into operating plan.
- Present complex analytical findings to non-technical stakeholders in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner. This includes structuring presentations and narratives that lead the audience from data point to business conclusion.
Education and Qualifications:
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as Business Analytics, Engineering, Mathematics/Statistics, or Economics.
Experience:
- 1-3 years prior experience as a Data Analyst or Business Analyst in Strategy, Finance or Marketing required.
- Experience at a strategy consulting firm preferred but not required.
- Experience in the Retail industry preferred but not required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Structured & Logical Thinking - The ability to understand the implications of strategic analysis, and to make strong, well supported recommendations.
- Analytical Rigor - Proven capability for conducting and managing quantitative strategic analysis. Advanced SQL proficiency for querying large, complex datasets. Expert-level experience with a major data visualization tool (e.g., Tableau, Power BI). Proficiency in Excel (VBA/advanced functions a plus). Experience with a statistical or scripting language (e.g., R or Python) is a strong plus. Background in basic Statistics preferred.
