Description

Summary

The IT Portfolio Manager is a strategic role responsible for overseeing the entire portfolio of IT project work. They are tasked with driving accountability for project timelines and outcomes, managing risks, resource planning, and ensuring the best possible return on IT investment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Accountability: Project Timelines and Outcomes

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive IT project portfolio, including clear project status, timelines, and budgets.
  • Use established project methodologies to hold leaders and teams accountable to timelines.
  • Collaborate with IT leadership and business stakeholders to prioritize projects and ensure consistent project evaluation, selection, and prioritization.
  • Monitor and report on portfolio performance.
  • Hold/oversee lessons-learned sessions during project closure to memorialize and communicate opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Facilitate a regular executive review of the portfolio of IT projects.

Project Governance & Risk Management

  • Implement and manage portfolio governance processes to validate project health.
  • Oversee risk management practices across the IT project portfolio, identifying potential issues
  • Communicate timeline/project risk mitigations to stakeholders.
  • Facilitate communication between project teams and business stakeholders, ensuring transparency and alignment.

Resource Planning & Allocation

  • Develop and maintain IT resource allocation/capacity planning and tracking of actual utilization.
  • Maintain long-term project health to provide early warning of conflicts or off-track project objectives/timelines/budgets.

Portfolio Management Processes

  • Lead the continuous improvement of portfolio management processes and tools.
  • Work effectively and support the team of project managers and other project leaders.
  • Assist in standardizing Business Relationship Management (BRM) practices.

Qualifications

Critical Qualifications

  • Experience & skills to generate and deliver presentations suitable for senior management / board level business leaders in familiar (non IT-specific) formats/language.
  • Exceptional communication skills – both oral and written English
  • Proven ability to drive outcomes and timelines in complicated technology/business projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical, professional, and executive staff.
  • Proven experience in IT portfolio management, project management, or a related field.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in large enterprise IT organizations.
  • Experience in manufacturing or a similar industry
  • Understanding of IT infrastructure, applications, and software development life cycles.

Education and/or Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in information technology
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in portfolio management or similar roles (BRM, BA, PM, Product Owner, Leadership)
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • PMP, PgMP, or similar certifications are desirable.
