Overview:

We are seeking a Section Head for Accelerator Systems in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD). The Research Accelerator Division’s mission is to safely and reliably operate the SNS Accelerator and Target and to execute impactful Accelerator R&D focused on SNS improvements and strategic opportunities, all in support of delivering neutrons for impactful scientific discovery.

The Accelerator Systems Section oversees the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation, maintenance, and improvement of SNS Accelerator systems, including the Front End, normal and superconducting RF structures, high-power and low-level RF, high-voltage converter modulators, DC and pulsed power systems, the Central Helium Liquifier (CHL), Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS), vacuum systems, and test facilities. The Section Head leads technical groups, setting technology and operational directions, supporting world-class achievements, ensuring clear project priorities, modeling exemplary safety and quality practices, and fostering a diverse and supportive workplace.

The Accelerator System Section Head leads the following groups:

  1. SCl systems (Cryogenics and SRF) — Operations, maintenance, system engineering and improvement of SNS cryogenic systems that include 2K and 4K cryogenic systems for the SNS superconducting linear accelerator (SCL); cryomodules and SRF test facilities; R&Ds in cryo and SRF.

  1. Front End Systems — Operations, maintenance, system engineering and upgrades for the SNS Front End Systems; R&D in advanced ion sources

  1. RF Systems — Maintenance, operation support, system engineering, improvement and upgrade of all SNS linac high-power and low-level RF systems and RF test facilities

  1. Electrical Power Conversion — Maintenance, operation support, system engineering, improvement and upgrade of all SNS high voltage converter modulators (HVCM), high speed H- beam choppers, pulse modulators for kicker injection and extraction, and dc power supplies for magnets which provide beam shaping and positioning; R&D HVCM and pulsed power systems

  1. Vacuum Systems – operations, maintenance, system engineering improvement and upgrade of all SNS vacuum systems; support vacuum systems for other divisions at SNS.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate safe, effective operations and R&D activities across the section.

  • Work collaboratively with the Division Director and Group Leaders to develop and execute a strategic vision that advances world-leading operations and technology directions.

  • Collaborate with Group Leaders to establish and assess metrics for success and impact.

  • Support staff performance, professional development, and long-term workforce planning in collaboration with Group Leaders.

  • Drive and uphold a strong culture of safety, integrity, and responsible conduct of research.

  • Identify and pursue external funding opportunities and strategic collaborations.

  • Contribute to planning and initiatives at the division, directorate, and laboratory levels.

  • Build strong, collaborative teams by leveraging ORNL capabilities and partnerships.

  • Represent the section within the laboratory and the broader external community.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in a science or engineering related field and at least 12 years of experience.

  • Candidates with an MS or PhD may be considered with commensurate experience (typically MS +10 years, PhD +7 years).

  • A minimum of three years of experience in leading scientific and/or technical groups.

  • Experience in leading accelerator systems engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of accomplishments in delivering innovative operational and technical solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading accelerator R&D and/or engineering development.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.


To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.


For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
