As an RCT at ORNL, you will directly support critical programs across neutron sciences (SNS and HFIR), isotope research and production, nuclear facilities operations, laboratory modernization initiatives, and essential facility maintenance and outage activities. This position resides within the Radiological Protection Operations Group, part of the Nuclear & Radiological Protection Division in ORNL’s Environment, Safety, Health, & Quality Directorate. Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform routine radiation detection instrument performance tests.
- Radiation and contamination monitoring.
- Collection of air samples.
- Posting and labeling of radioactive materials.
- Access control into radiological areas.
- Radioactive waste surveys.
- Radiological job coverage during higher hazard radiological work.
- Mentoring of radiological workers.
- Obtain qualification and be able to work shift relief as needed.

Basic Qualifications:
- AS degree and 2 years of relevant experience in radiological protection or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered (HS diploma and 4 years of related experience).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently qualified as a DOE Senior Radiological Control Technician.
- Qualified as an ANSI/ANS 3.1-1987 Senior RCT.
- Active registration with the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT).
- Broad experience in operational radiation protection at a DOE National Laboratory.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
- Q clearance: This position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
- Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
