Overview:

We are seeking an Electrical Engineering Lead who will focus on and take ownership of the electrical engineering scope of the magnetic field generation systems for the accelerator systems in the Second Target Station (STS) project, and also act as the STS cable configuration and procurement lead with responsibility for the implementation and management of the cabling design, procurement and installation process for the STS project as a whole. This position resides in the Accelerator Systems (AS) group of the Second Target Station project, Neutron Upgrades Project Office at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ownership of the design and integration of electrical systems associated with magnets, power supplies, beam diagnostics, vacuum controllers and control interfaces within the AS scope,

  • Ensuring that electrical designs meet the technical and Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements

  • Act as Control Account Manager for magnet power supplies and cabling in the AS scope

  • Provide support for procurement, installation and testing of electrical systems in AS scope

  • Chair the STS Electrical Safety and Standardization Committee, responsible for evaluating and approving new cable types for use by the project and reviewing suitability of existing approved cables for particular applications within the project (in terms of electrical characteristics, electrical safety, fire safety, signal integrity, radiation resistance, standardization, availability etc.)

  • Writing and executing the cable management plan for the STS Project, including specifying and selecting a software tool to support 3D CAD modeling of cable runs and preparing a staffing plan to support the implementation

  • Ensuring STS cable designs and installations are code compliant

  • Coordinating design with STS Structural Engineers to ensure seismic qualification of cabling supports where required by code

  • Interfacing with Installation Coordinators during the installation of cables and associated hardware

  • Develop strong working relationships across the project and SNS Operations with CAMs, line managers, vendors, sponsors, and project support organizations including ES&H, QA, procurement, business, project controls, and human resources

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in electrical engineering or related field with 10 or more years of relevant work experience or an MS in electrical engineering or related field with 8 or more years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience designing and maintaining high power AC and DC electrical systems.

  • Good understanding of industry codes and standards related to electrical installations and electrical safety requirements, including NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, NFPA70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace, Underwriter Laboratories Standards, etc.

  • Experience creating engineering drawings, specifications, procedures, reports and plans.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of AC power distribution concepts

  • Knowledge of DC and pulsed power supplies of the types used in particle accelerators

  • Knowledge of design for EMC

  • Demonstrated ability to guide work of a team of engineers and technicians in a project environment

  • Experience with circuit simulation, mechanical CAD and printed circuit board design software and tools

  • Expertise in troubleshooting and use of standard laboratory test equipment

  • A strong background in applying electrical safety principles in a setting that includes severe electrical hazards

  • Experience with vendor management

  • Familiar with DOE Directives related to responding to electrical safety-related events

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.

Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
