Job Description

The Student Engagement and Career Coordinator (SECC) plays a vital role in supporting BAS undergraduate students throughout their academic and professional journeys. This position is responsible for managing and refining student-facing processes that support professional development, internship achievement, and post-graduate readiness. As the BAS undergraduate internship coordinator, the SECC promotes internship opportunities and supports the department’s transition toward requiring internships for all BAS students.

A key focus of this role is building meaningful relationships with students and cultivating a sense of belonging within the department. Through one-on-one coaching, career programming, targeted outreach, and community building events, the SECC helps students feel connected to the BAS community and supports their progress toward professional goals. They also help connect students with faculty when more advanced, technical guidance is needed. In addition to direct student support, the SECC tracks and reports on key student outcomes like internship participation, advising touchpoints, and engagement in career activities. By fostering a high-touch, data-informed approach to engagement, the SECC contributes meaningfully to both student outcomes and departmental growth.

Responsibilities

  • Student Career Development and Coaching
    • In alignment with campus and college career services and by leveraging university outreach platforms such as Handshake and Haslam Headlines, deliver individual and small group coaching sessions, classroom presentations, and strategic outreach focused on foundational professional skills (including networking, LinkedIn best practices, resume writing, internship searches, interview preparation, and workplace readiness).
    • Facilitate career planning sessions and provide individualized support to 1st–2nd year students to help them set goals, build early professional skills, and secure internships prior to their senior year.
    • Promote and track participation in the Career Readiness Certificate program; integrate certificate components into coaching.
    • Prepare students for employer-facing experiences (e.g., site visits, events) through targeted coaching and pre-event guidance.
    • Connect students with faculty mentors for advanced conversations around tools, technical skills, and analytics career paths.
    • Attend professional development events, as well as state and regional conferences (NACE, SoACE, etc), to stay current on evolving best practices in career development and coaching.
  • Internship Program Management and Data Reporting
    • Collaborate with the department's Corporate Partner staff and faculty to connect students with internship and project opportunities offered by existing corporate partners.
    • Develop and maintain a comprehensive advising notes system to document student meetings, track progress, and record referrals and engagement trends.
    • Build and manage an internship reporting system, using advising data to identify trends, surface challenges, and deliver insights that inform programming and support departmental decision-making.
  • Student Engagement Events
    • Support departmental student organizations by overseeing club budgets, coordinating resources, and hosting an annual orientation with club leadership to align goals and promote successful student-led programming.
    • In conjunction with the department's corporate partner team, coordinate multiple annual site visits to employer offices, including managing student sign-ups, travel logistics, and preparation to ensure students are equipped to engage professionally with prospective employers.
    • Collaborate with the corporate partner team to support twice-annual Corporate Partner Weeks by ensuring students are informed, registered, and prepared to participate meaningfully in networking and recruitment events.
    • Plan and execute student-centered events such as awards ceremonies, recognition programs, and social activities that foster a sense of belonging and celebrate student success.
    • Attend employer site visits, networking nights, Corporate Partner Week events, and regional conferences (including but not limited to the NTC) to support student engagement and departmental representation.
  • JTV Center Operational Support
    • Support the BAS 479 Experts Program by managing communications with external experts, coordinating group meeting logistics, and collecting and distributing project feedback in a timely manner.
    • Oversee daily operations of the JTV Center, including room setup, coordinating food and beverage needs, and granting guest access for BAS-sponsored events and meetings.
    • Provide executive-level administrative support to the JTV Center Executive Director, including project tracking.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in education or career advising, preferably in a university setting
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Ability to provide strong advocacy of students in achieving their career goals; patience and resilience with an often demanding constituency; ability to understand the often reactive and immediate nature of career advisory work
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to coach students on professional development topics like resume writing, interviewing, networking, and workplace readiness.
    • Ability to recognize when students require deeper technical coaching and effectively connect them with subject matter experts.
    • Strong customer service orientation and commitment to continual process improvement
    • Have fundamental knowledge of business industries and business analytics careers that can be used to support students exploring career opportunities
    • Skill in designing, maintaining, and presenting reports and data related to student outcomes; ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data to inform programming and communicate trends to departmental leadership.
    • Demonstrated collaboration skills, particularly in cross-functional teams (e.g., faculty, advisors, career staff).
    • This role may evolve over time as the department’s student engagement and partner strategy expands. Flexibility and adaptability in responsibilities are expected.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelors or Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Business, or related field
  • Experience:
    • Experience working with students from business disciplines or associated employment industries
    • Experience working with and coaching non-traditional students, graduate students, and/or business students
    • Experience planning and facilitating virtual programming
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Ability to manage projects from concept to completion, including developing new processes, creating documentation, implementing solutions, and establishing systems for ongoing tracking and improvement in alignment with the department’s existing processes.
