Job Description
The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Health Information Specialist 2. The Health Information Specialist 2 performs the coding, abstracting, and clinic database development functions with clinical diagnoses and procedures. This position handles filing of patient Insurance and supports Release of Information. The Health Information Specialist 2 must perform complex technical duties related to patient records and perform associated clerical duties required to maintain the function of the Health Information Unit ensuring that established standards for proper record completion, filing, and confidentiality are maintained.
*Due to the upcoming implementation of ezyVet (electronic medical record system) at the College of Veterinary Medicine, this position’s duties will likely be altered.
Responsibilities
- Processes and scans designated records
- Edits and uploads Medical Records to digital file
- Handles more complex patient insurance claims
- Handles non-routine Release of Information requests
- Performs Coding and Abstracting of patient records as required
- Maintains daily inventory of records scanned, edited and uploaded
- Assists faculty, residents, interns, students, and staff with data needs for research, education, grant and contract writing, direct patient care, and improvement of care/services being rendered
- Gathers data for building diagnostic and procedural codes
- Communicates with clients, staff, students, and clinicians
- Supervises, teaches, and assists designated employees and students as appropriate
- When required, acts as lead worker for Health Information Clerk personnel
- Performs other related duties as required
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Education:
- Must be a graduate of an American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)-approved program in Health Information Technology with an associate degree.
- Experience:
- 4 years of relevant experience in a similar healthcare setting.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of the facilities coding system
- Ability to provide supervision to staff and students
- Knowledge of local and state laws in regards to records management
- Ability to set own priorities and organize work within general established guidelines
- Ability to communicate with clients, clinicians, staff and students
- Knowledge of established policies and legal guidelines
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.
