Job Description
The Building Automation Systems Foreman is responsible for overseeing the installation, programming, maintenance, repair, and operation of building automation systems (BAS) that control HVAC, lighting, energy management, electrical, plumbing, leak detection, research laboratory exhaust systems. This position serves as a working leader, coordinating day-to-day activities of building automation technicians, ensuring compliance with codes and standards, and providing technical expertise on system integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate the work of BAS technicians and contractors.
- Assign tasks, provide direction, and ensure timely completion of projects and maintenance activities.
- Supervise the installation, programing, commissioning, and maintenance of building automation system components including controllers, sensors, actuators, and user interfaces.
- Provide direction for diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of BAS-related problems and HVAC control issues.
- Develop and modify system sequences of operation (SOO) to improve system performance and efficiency.
- Integrate new systems into existing BAS architecture.
- Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders during construction, retrofit, or upgrade projects.
- Liaise with vendors and suppliers to facilitate the timely delivery of inspections and equipment.
- Assess and select contractors for specific assignments, monitoring their performance to ensure compliance with quality standards and project specifications.
- Review plans, submittals, and specifications for BAS components.
- Monitor BAS performance to ensure optimal energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and operational reliability.
- Recommend and implement energy-saving strategies and control logic improvements.
- Maintain accurate records of system modifications, maintenance activities, and software backups.
- The assessment of the team's performance, the establishment of goals, the organization of upcoming training programs, the proactive resolution of issues when standards are not achieved, and the communication of advanced preventive and predictive maintenance strategies to facility personnel and students.
- The Foreman is responsible for ensuring that the Building Commissioning Technicians calibrate and self-certify their testing instruments on a quarterly basis, respond swiftly to emergencies, assist with campus energy management efforts, and comply with departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Vocational or technical training in Building Automation
- Experience: Minimum Five (5) years of experience in building automation systems
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Proficient in programming and troubleshooting BAS systems (e.g., Trane, Johnson Controls, Distech, ALC). Strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical systems, and controls integration.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
- Familiarity with computer-based BAS front-end software and mobile diagnostic tools.
- Other Conditions: Valid Driver’s license

As the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s largest non-academic department, team members are responsible for facilities maintenance and repair, custodial needs, landscaping and lawncare, utility work, in-house and capital construction projects, facilities planning and design, environmental initiatives, pest control, campus event services, and facilities administration functions for both the flagship campus and the agricultural institute.
