The Assistant Director of Haslam Academic Coaching provides strategic leadership for the coordination and delivery of academic coaching services serving students in the Haslam College of Business, while operating centrally within the Academic Success Center. In partnership with the Academic Success Center Director and the Associate Director of Academic Coaching, this role ensures alignment between coaching strategy, college priorities, and institutional retention and persistence goals.

Serving as a liaison between the Academic Success Center and the Haslam College of Business, the Assistant Director advances high-quality, consistent coaching practices that support student transition, engagement, and academic success. This position supervises a team of professional academic coaches, oversees performance management and professional development, and contributes to division-wide planning, training, outreach, and assessment efforts. As a member of the ASC leadership team, the Assistant Director plays a key role in shaping the strategic direction and operational effectiveness of academic coaching services.

Required Qualifications

  • Education:

    • Master’s Degree

  • Experience:

    • Master’s degree in any field and 3 years of experience by date of hire in a higher education setting (part-time work considered at half-time of experience).

  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Knowledge of academic support in education.

    • Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with campus partners.

    • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of student populations.

    • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and academic partners.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience:

    • Completed master’s degree.

    • Minimum one year in higher education administration, student affairs, education, or a related field.

    • Experience supervising professional staff in an academic support or student success setting.

    • Direct experience managing team of professional in higher education setting

  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Experience overseeing academic coaching, advising, or student success programs.

    • Skill in coaching professional staff and developing leadership capacity.

    • Knowledge of evidence-informed coaching practices and retention strategies in higher education.

    • Experience supporting program growth, scaling, or innovation within student success services.

Haslam Academic Coaching Leadership and Oversight

  • Provide strategic oversight of academic coaching services serving the Haslam College of Business students.

  • Serve as a liaison between the Academic Success Center and the Haslam College of Business, collaborating with advising, faculty, and student support partners to align coaching initiatives with college priorities and student success goals.

  • Engage collaboratively with Academic Success Center staff supporting Haslam students—including academic coaches and Vol Study Center staff—to promote cohesive service delivery, shared communication, and integrated student support strategies.

  • Partner with Haslam campus stakeholders to strengthen referral pathways, coordinated care models, and cross-unit collaboration supporting Haslam students.

  • Partner with Academic Success Center assessment staff to review participation data, outcomes, and trends to inform program adjustments and recommendations.

  • Monitor qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate coaching effectiveness, identify opportunities for improvement, and support evidence-based decision-making.

Supervision & Professional Staff Management

  • Provide direct supervision and leadership to a team of Haslam Professional Academic Coaches, who serve as key members of student Vol Success Teams, including completing performance reviews, implementing feedback mechanisms, and delivering ongoing professional development to enhance both student outcomes and staff engagement.
  • Assist in onboarding Professional Academic Coaches using a comprehensive coach training curriculum that addresses strengths-based student support, effective communication strategies, crisis intervention, and data-informed case management, ensuring coaches maintain the highest standards of practice.
  • Foster a supportive and growth-oriented team environment by serving as a mentor to Professional Academic Coaches, championing their professional development, providing strategic guidance for managing complex student caseloads, and creating pathways for coaches to develop leadership skills within the Academic Success Center.

Academic Success Center Leadership and Internal Operations

  • Serve as a key member of the Academic Success Center leadership team, contributing to strategic planning, operational problem-solving, and identifying opportunities for service enhancement, process improvement, and innovative programming that addresses evolving student needs across both Academic Success Center initiatives (e.g., Vol Study Center services, academic coaching, probation support, and related student success services).
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Academic Coaching to enhance the comprehensive training programs for all academic coaches within the Academic Success Center, including onboarding, continuing education, and annual refreshers.
  • Develop and deliver training on academic coaching theory, best practices, student development, motivation, learning strategies, and ethical coaching standards to ensure consistency and quality across coaching services.

Cross-Unit Collaboration & Campus Outreach

  • Build and maintain relationships with campus partners including the Division of Student Success, student affairs units, academic departments, and faculty, to strengthen referral networks and ensure Academic Success Center services remain integrated within the broader student success ecosystem.
  • Represent the Academic Success Center at university events, including new student orientations, open houses, and recruitment and transition programs, to raise awareness of available support resources across the institution.
