Mental Health Therapists perform all functions of a campus comprehensive counseling center team member in a multi-disciplinary setting. Mental Health Therapists provide individual and group therapy while also engaging with the campus community via outreach and consultation services with faculty, staff, students, and families around mental health concerns. Mental Health Therapists in the center may also provide training/supervision for graduate students in the center’s training programs.
The Student Counseling Center (SCC) is a multi-disciplinary clinical team providing triage, crisis, short-term therapy, group therapy, consultation, outreach, and campus mental health support. Mental Health Therapists are exempt, year-round, full-time; non-tenure track staff in the Student Counseling Center, who are part of a multi-disciplinary clinical team providing both clinical services and, as appropriate to experience level, supervision for the center’s graduate student trainees.
Required Qualifications
Education: Master’s Degree
Experience: Licensed or license eligible as a Mental Health Service Provider in the State of Tennessee as a Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Social Worker, or Marriage and Family Therapist, or other clinical license; May be pre-licensed professional willing to work under clinical supervision; Experience providing psychotherapeutic or counseling services including short-term individual, couple, and group counseling modalities; Experience managing mental health crises including assessment of suicidal and homicidal risk.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Ability to assess and intervene with students in emotional crisis
Ability to provide individual and group counseling/psychotherapy
Ability to provide clinical supervision of psychology students in training
Ability to provide outreach programming on topics related to college student mental health
Ability to provide consultation concerning college student mental health
Ability to fulfill job functions in a culturally competent manner
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Doctoral Degree
Experience: 2 years of post-graduate experience providing mental health services, independently licensed in a mental health field; Sufficient number of years post-license to provide clinical supervision in relevant sub discipline; LCSW, LCMHC-HSP, LMFT or license-eligible in Tennessee

The Student Counseling Center is a multidisciplinary clinical team dedicated to supporting the mental health, wellbeing, and academic success of students through responsive mental health services. The center provides a range of clinical offerings including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, outreach and prevention programming, consultation, and training for graduate trainees and campus partners. Staff collaborate closely with university departments to promote a holistic, community-based approach to student care. The Student Counseling Center values clinical excellence, innovation, and a strong commitment to student development within a dynamic campus environment.
Approximately 65 percent of workload is direct clinical service via client care or clinical supervision, with the remainder focused on documentation, administration, meetings, outreach, or teaching training seminars. The Student Counseling Center staff’s typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional opportunities for outreach or campus support on evenings and weekends.
