The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Electrical Tradesman. The Electrical Tradesman is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems and equipment throughout the College of Veterinary Medicine. This position supports academic, research, clinical, and administrative operations by ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical infrastructure in classrooms, laboratories, animal hospitals, research facilities, and support buildings. The incumbent performs electrical maintenance and construction activities in compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and university policies.

The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional on-call, weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.

Required Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or Vocational/Trade School
  
• Experience: Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience. Possession of a Journeyman Electrician License, or the ability to obtain licensure within an established time frame if required by applicable state or local regulations. Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial, institutional, healthcare, or industrial electrical maintenance. Valid driver's license.
  
• Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of backup power systems, generators, UPS systems, and building automation controls. Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable safety regulations. Knowledge of electrical distribution systems, motors, motor controls, transformers, and emergency power systems. Knowledge of electrical troubleshooting techniques and testing equipment.
  • Ability to identify and resolve electrical problems independently. Ability to prioritize work assignments and respond effectively to emergency situations. Ability to communicate technical information effectively with customers, faculty, staff, students, contractors, and maintenance personnel. Ability to operate a forklift, scissors lift, and general power tools. Ability to provide professional customer service and maintain productive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, contractors, and visitors.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing electrical equipment and systems. Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals. Skill in safely operating electrical testing equipment, lifts, and power tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Education: Associate’s degree
  
• Experience: Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial, institutional, healthcare, or industrial electrical maintenance. Experience in higher education, healthcare, veterinary, research, or laboratory environments. Experience with fire alarm systems and low-voltage controls. Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Inspect, test, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and code-compliant operation of facility infrastructure. Diagnose electrical issues and repair or replace components including electrical panels, circuit breakers, switches, outlets, transformers, motors, lighting systems, and related equipment. Coordinate and perform emergency repairs to minimize downtime and maintain continuity of operations. Assist with preventive maintenance, facility projects, and other maintenance activities necessary to support operational objectives.

Perform comprehensive preventive and predictive maintenance on electrical systems, equipment, and associated components to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and longevity of facility assets. Conduct routine inspections, testing, and diagnostics to identify potential issues before they result in equipment failure, operational disruptions, or safety hazards. Maintain accurate maintenance records and recommend repairs, upgrades, or replacements as necessary to support efficient facility operations and regulatory compliance.

Interpret and work from building blueprints, architectural plans, drawings, and electrical and equipment wiring diagrams and schematics. Perform construction, renovation, and repair of offices, classrooms, laboratories, clinical spaces, and hospital support areas. Install and modify doors, drywall, steel framing, acoustical ceilings, and interior finishes in active academic and healthcare environments. Assemble, and install modular furniture and customized workstations for academic, administrative, laboratory and clinical use. Install, relocate, and maintain hospital, laboratory, research, and clinical equipment in compliance with institutional and safety standards. Construct new walls and reconfigure existing spaces using steel framing and drywall systems to support programmatic and clinical needs.

Complete daily facility walk-throughs to proactively identify maintenance issues, safety risks, or regulatory discrepancies, and ensure all concerns are communicated to maintenance management. Responsible for maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe maintenance shop environment to support efficient operations, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety. Ensures tools, equipment, materials, and work areas are properly organized, maintained, and readily accessible for maintenance staff.
